London-based Linklaters is cutting bonuses in half for U.S. associates in New York and abroad.

Year-end bonuses will range from $17,500 to $32,500, half the amount paid last year, Legal Week reports. The lower amount matches that paid by London firms Clifford Chance and Allen & Overy, as well as several New York law firms.

Linklaters associates will get their regular salary increases next year, however. Some large law firms are opting to freeze associate pay.

I think there are now more halflings in the big firms than in The Shire.
