An unscientific survey of 13 managing partners gathered for a meeting in California revealed the iPad faces a marketing challenge among law firm leaders.

The Legal Pad blog threw out a question about iPad ownership at a meeting hosted by Justin Miller, director of a legal specialty group for Union Bank. “The results surprised us,” the blog writes. “Not one of them high rollers has an iPad yet.” Only four of the 13 managing partners said they planned to buy an iPad in the next year.

According to the ABA Journal, the iPad is “much more of a content consumption device than a content creation device.” The article questions whether the onscreen keyboard will be adequate for note-taking and document creation, and says it’s too early to tell whether it will “replace the ubiquitous legal pad.”

The device’s true potential may be in its ability to run apps, according to the ABA Journal. And there’s a new one available: ABA Journal for iPhone/iPad.
