Upstate New York lawyer accused of bomb threat on same day of sanctions hearing to plead guilty

A lawyer in Syracuse, New York, who reportedly called in a bomb threat to avoid a hearing on an opposing lawyer’s request for sanctions against her, will plead guilty to a third-degree charge of falsely reporting an incident, according to a court filing.
The hearing for Jacqueline B. Jones, 47, is scheduled for Friday Syracuse.com reports. The government’s sentencing memo (PDF) asks that she receives one year of probation that includes a 60-day jail sentence, a $15,000 fine and 250 hours of community service.
Court records accuse Jones of calling in the bomb threat to a daycare center in the federal courthouse in February 2015 on the day of the sanctions hearing, the article reports. An opposing lawyer was seeking a sanction against Jones for failing to obey a court order to produce evidence in a civil case.
Edward Menkin, Jones’ attorney, asked the court to not fine her more than $5,000, stating in court papers that she lost her job and her husband recently closed his business, Syracuse.com reports. Menkin also told the court that Jones is a mother, according to the article.
