US-born Israeli soldier won't be jailed for eating non-kosher sandwich

Officials say a Boston man who volunteered for combat service in Israel’s army won’t be put behind bars for eating a non-kosher sandwich after all, following an international kerfuffle over a planned 11-day jail term.
Initially, Ohad Levy was not only to be jailed but booted from a training course for commanders because he had returned from a visit to his grandmother’s kibbutz with sandwiches containing pork sausage, according to Haaretz and the Los Angeles Times (sub. req.).
But on Tuesday the jail time was rescinded, and Levy was allowed to continue with the course. He was, however, grounded for a weekend instead of being granted scheduled leave.
“It took me a few minutes to understand this was real and that in Israel of 2015 my son, who chose to return to Israel and volunteer for combat service, is going to jail for eating non-kosher meat,” the soldier’s mother, Osnat Levy, wrote in a Facebook post.
All kitchens in the Israeli army are kosher, and military regulations prohibit bringing non-kosher food on base.
