Va. Becomes 30th State to Temporarily Halt Executions

Virginia has called a moratorium on all executions until the U.S. Supreme Court decides the constitutionality of lethal injections.

Gov. Timothy M. Kaine called for a halt to executions on Tuesday, delaying the execution scheduled for Edward Nathaniel Bell on April 8, the Associated Press reports.

This makes Virginia the 30th state to order such a stay since September when the Supreme Court granted cert to cases that challenge Kentucky’s lethal injection procedures. See "Tinkering With Lethal Injection," in January's ABA Journal.
