Although technically not a merger, an agreement by Verrill Dana to acquire the employees of a Connecticut-based law firm effectively is one, says managing partner K.C. Jones.

And when the 20 lawyers from Levett Rockwood come on board around the beginning of the year, the combined roster of approximately 140 attorneys will make Verill Dana, along with Pierce Atwood, the biggest law firm based in Maine, reports the Press Herald.

“Our goal is to be a pre-eminent law firm in New England,” Jones told the newspaper.

In Connecticut, Verrill Dana’s current lawyers will move from their Stamford offices to Levett Rockwood’s facilities in Westport, Connecticut, notes the Bangor Daily News.

“We’re very proud of our roots in Maine, but we found our existing clients have been telling us they wish we had a bigger presence in Connecticut,” Jones told Mainebiz. “It’s all about having the breadth and depth of service for clients.”

Headquartered in Portland, the firm also has offices in Augusta; Boston; Providence, Rhode Island; and Washington, D.C.
