Virginia gay-marriage licenses are put on hold after SCOTUS issues stay
Plans to begin issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples in Virginia on Thursday have been put on hold because of a stay issued by the U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday.
The Supreme Court stay delayed enforcement of a ruling striking down Virginia’s ban on gay marriages by the Richmond, Virginia-based 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, report the National Law Journal, the Washington Post and the New York Times.
The Supreme Court has also issued a stay of a decision overturning the ban on same-sex marriage in Utah.
The Supreme Court did not act on a cert request filed by some parties in the Virginia litigation.
