Wal-Mart announced Wednesday it has hired a Sidley & Austin lawyer to oversee its compliance, ethics and investigation units, Reuters reports.

Jay Jorgensen, a partner at Sidley’s Washington, D.C., office, will serve as Wal-Mart’s senior vice president and global chief compliance officer. He will report to Wal-Mart general counsel Jeff Gearhart. The change begins Dec. 1, according to a memo sent by Mike Duke, the company’s chief executive.

The announcement follows news earlier this year of an scandal over allegations that Wal-Mart de México paid bribes to secure permits and approvals to build new stores.

Also, Reuters reports, Wal-Mart recently announced that Daniel Trujillo, the former deputy general counsel and compliance director for oil field services company Schlumberger Ltd, has joined the company as senior vice president and chief compliance officer at Walmart International.
