Now is the time to get started on summer work for law students interested in winning a post-graduation position as a law firm associate in what is expected to be a very competitive job market this year.

When computerized legal research company representatives visit your law school campus this spring, learn everything you can, advises FindLaw columnist Julie Hilden. Then, when you start your summer job, you can hit the ground running.

Another area in which spring study can be very profitable is writing skills: They’re critical to every assignment, since a lack of clarity can obscure even the best research. Likewise, if you know what practice area you might be working in, and it’s not one that you’re already familiar with, take a good look at a hornbook and other basic material now, she suggests.

“Whereas once being a summer associate simply meant getting by, now it means standing out,” Hilden says—and avoiding alcohol-fueled bad behavior that can eliminate, in a single evening, all your hard work for months beforehand.
