A Washington Post editorial is calling on the U.S. Supreme Court to allow cameras to broadcast oral arguments.

The editorial backs pending legislation that would allow cameras at arguments unless the court determines coverage would violate the due process rights of a party.

The newspaper notes that about 70 people braved the cold for a chance to see arguments yesterday on the rights of habeas detainees. But the court’s ban on cameras meant that others could not watch.

“This is a travesty, especially in a case of such importance,” the Post writes.
