Updated: Cadwalader Wickersham & Taft has admittedly poached six partners from McDermott Will & Emery, and as many as nine partners are expected to make the move, potentially bringing along dozens of law firm associates, too, according to the Washington Post.

A subsequent Financial Times article reports that Cadwalader has confirmed the plan to establish a new Washington, D.C.-based energy and commodities practice group with McDermott lawyers. It will be headed by Paul Pantano Jr., who is the co-head of the energy and commodities practice group at McDermott.

Regulatory practice groups are hot because of increased scrutiny under the Obama administration, notes the Post.

Karen Dewis, who is Pantano’s counterpart in McDermott’s mergers and acquisitions practice group, will head Cadwalader’s mergers and acquisitions practice in Washington, says a Cadwalader press release (PDF).

Neither she nor Pantano returned calls from the Post.
