One of the best-known law firms in Scotland will be closing its doors at the end of the day after 50 years in business, staff were recently informed, over what a court-appointed manager describes as “extremely challenging financial circumstances.”

The financial issues at Ross Harper came to light after questions were raised during a routine inspection by the Law Society of Scotland. An accountant was then appointed by the Court of Sessions to review the law firm’s books, the Scotsman reports.

In addition, partners Paul McHolland, Alan Miller, Joseph Mullen and Jim Price had their licenses temporarily suspended during the investigation.

Ian Mitchell of chartered accountants Henderson Loggie was appointed earlier this month to serve as interim judicial factor.

Updated May 3 to clarify in the headline that the firm is based in the United Kingdom.
