Ethics

This week, a Northwestern University law professor argued that in light of the revelations about lawyers for the U.S. government who condoned the CIA’s use of harsh interrogation techniques for suspected terrorists, “an enhanced ethical regime” for the legal profession is needed. Professor Alexa Van Brunt suggested that a “do no harm” oath be required for lawyers, as it is for doctors. This led to a spirited debate in our comments.

So this week, we’d like to ask you: What new lawyer ethics rules do you think are needed? Are there ethics rules you think should be revised or dropped? Is more ethics guidance needed related to lawyer advertising, new technologies and social media innovation? Or are there ethics standards currently in place that place an unfair burden on practicing lawyers?
