good idea

Last week at Attorney at Work, Canadian law firm consultant Jordan Furlong wrote about a great piece of advice he received as a 15-year-old. His first paying job was mowing a home’s lawn. When he finished the job, he realized he had no idea what his fee should be. Flustered, he asked the man who answered the door at the home what he thought it should be.

“I can’t be buyer and seller both,” the man told him.

Furlong says that’s the best advice he’s ever received about pricing. “Know what you’re worth, because if you let the buyer decide that, you will always end up underselling your services. Or almost always.”

So this week, we’d like to ask you: What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? And how has it stuck with you throughout your life and career?

Answer in the comments.

Read the answers to last week’s question–there were some doozies: What’s the weirdest thing you’ve seen a co-worker do on the job?

Featured answer:

Posted by Co-dependent luncher: “I worked at a small firm where the paralegal had to go to lunch with me every day. If I tried to make an excuse so I could run errands, she would accompany me on the errand. I would have to make up client appointments so I could eat alone.”
