The Latham & Watkins lawyer in charge of the firm’s corporate work in Spain has led a team to White & Case.

Juan Manuel De Remedios, who will serve as executive partner in Madrid for his new firm, is a capital markets and mergers and acquisitions specialist licensed to practice both in New York and in Spain, according to Legal Week and a White & Case press release. The office is the first in Spain for White & Case.

Yoko Takagi, a former Latham counsel, will now be another partner with capital markets and M&A expertise at White & Case in Madrid, and a number of Latham associates are also part of the exiting group.

The new White & Case office is expected to advise clients in M&A, debt and equity capital markets matters involving Spain, the U.S. and cross-border transactions. Another 60 lawyers fluent in Spanish work in other White & Case offices and will support the new office, the press release notes.

“Juan Manuel ticks two boxes in one: he is both a strong M&A and capital markets practitioner,” partner Oliver Brettle, who is in charge of the firm’s London office, told Legal Week. “Spain was an obvious gap and had been so for a long time. We had been looking for the last five years or so, because we wanted to wait for someone of Juan Manuel’s quality and international practice reach.”
