Being a White House lawyer may be prestigious, but it’s not as high-paying as a big law firm job.
Salary information released by the Obama administration shows White House counsel Gregory Craig makes $172,200—far short of the $1.7 million he made last year as a partner at Williams & Connolly, the National Law Journal reports.
Three people who are deputy White House counsel make $158,500 each. Twelve people who are associate White House counsel make $130,500. Detailees from other federal agencies do a little better. One lawyer detailed from the Treasury Department, for example, makes $163,940.
Most of the salaries haven’t risen above the amounts paid to lawyers in the Bush administration, the story says.

These are not bad salaries considering the prestige associated with the White House positions and the future financial returns through the associations that they will form as a result of this employment.
