James “Whitey” Bulger, the 81-year-old fugitive and alleged killer recently captured by the FBI, was expected to ask for a court-appointed lawyer today, despite reports that $820,000 in cash was stashed in the Santa Monica, Calif., apartment where he was found.

It will be the second time Bulger, the alleged former leader of Boston’s Winter Hill Gang, has asked the federal court there to appoint a lawyer for him, Reuters reports. Federal prosecutors maintain that his defense should not be funded by the taxpayers. Bulger is also asking the court to consolidate his two indictments, from 1994 and 1999.

Meanwhile, on Monday Kevin J. Reddington, a prominent Boston lawyer, notified the court that he represents Bulger’s long-time girlfriend Catherine Grieg, the Boston Globe reported. She has been charged with harboring a federal fugitive.
