Boston-based law firm Nutter McClennen & Fish has been top-ranked in an American Lawyer associates survey for three years in a row, and a culture of openness is part of the reason.

Associates at the 150-lawyer firm gave their employer high ratings for associate relations, training and partner relations, the Am Law Daily reports.

In the comments section, associates praised Nutter for openness, even on sensitive matters of finance. The firm also stresses training and formal mentoring, and gives associates a lot of responsibility early on.

Rory Pheiffer, who joined the firm as a junior-level IP associate in 2007, told the Am Law Daily he’s doing a lot of “heavy lifting” despite his associate status. “It’s so leanly staffed,” he said, “that most of the time I’m the person who’s directly interacting with an inventor on a patent, or with a general counsel.”

The American Lawyer has corrected an error in associate law-firm rankings released last week, but Nutter has retained its first place, according to a revised chart. The new top five are:

1) Nutter McClennen & Fish

2) Thompson Coburn

3) Harter Secrest & Emery

4) Gibson Dunn

5) Munger, Tolles & Olson
