Wife of judge admits she poisoned him with antifreeze, gets 2 years in plea deal
Originally charged with attempted murder, the wife of a longtime Ohio judge pleaded guilty on Wednesday to felonious assault for poisoning him with antifreeze.
Officials said Carla Hague, 71, put the antifreeze in a glass of wine and she apologized in court after admitting she had poisoned Ashtabula County Common Pleas Judge Charles Hague in September with a “chemical” in his drink, according to WJW and the Star Beacon.
She and her lawyer said she had done so in an effort to preserve their 45-year marriage by creating an event that would help him get treatment for a medical condition.
The 72-year-old judge agreed with the sentence. “I have no anger or animosity toward Carla,” he said. “I am beyond that. I’m glad to have this huge black spot behind us and after today it will be. I hope Carla can get on with her life as we are going to get on with ours.”
The Ohio attorney general’s office prosecuted the case and an out-of-county judge presided.
