Nail salons boomed when times were good. Last year there were more than 58,000 full-service salons, compared to less than 45,000 in 1998.

But now some women are cutting back or cutting out nail salon visits, the New York Times reports. Some are trading acrylics for regular manicures, and more expensive French manicures for something more basic.

But at least one job expert told the Times it’s a bad idea for the unemployed to eliminate manicures. “The worst thing you can do when you get laid off is to eliminate all those extra indulgences,” argues Nancy Collamert, the founder of LayoffSurvivalGuide.com. “You’re going to feel punished.”

A lawyer following that advice is the newly unemployed Sage Schoenfeld, who recently moved to Denver where manicures are more expensive than in New York. “I don’t even look at this as luxury,” she told the Times. “It’s basic cleanliness.”
