If Michael Mukasey is confirmed as attorney general, he will face a tough decision on whether to back Craig Morford for the department’s second-in-command job.

Morford, who already holds the job of deputy attorney general in an acting capacity, is seen as a trouble-shooter and has support among federal prosecutors, the Wall Street Journal reports (sub. req.). He has helped prosecute corruption cases that hurt both Republicans and Democrats.

Administration officials have suggested Mukasey may want to make his own choice for the important job. But the newspaper says such a move could raise questions, “in particular about whether [Morford] was denied the job because of his past work on politically sensitive cases that have hurt Republicans.”

U.S. District Judge Gerald Rosen calls Morford a ” Mr. Fix-It” and praises him for his work investigating a controversial terrorism prosecution in Detroit. “He had rock-solid judgment [and an] extremely high level of integrity,” the judge told the newspaper.
