A Canadian woman has been sentenced to 90 days in jail for causing two deaths when she stopped her car in highway traffic to help some ducklings crossing the road.

Emma Czornobaj, 26, was sentenced in Montreal on Thursday, report Reuters, the Montreal Gazette and the Canadian Press. She had faced a maximum sentence of life in prison after she was convicted in Montreal in June on two counts of criminal negligence involving death.

In June 2010, a motorcycle had rear-ended Czornobaj’s car when she stopped for the ducks, killing the motorcyclist and his 16-year-old daughter, who was a passenger.

Czornobaj was also banned from driving for 10 years and ordered to perform 240 hours of community service.
