Would-be carjacker crawled away after lawyer knocked him down and kicked him, police report says
Corrected: A Dallas lawyer on her way home from work was able to knock down an armed would-be carjacker, kicking him before he crawled away, according to a police report.
Melissa Kingston, a partner with Friedman & Feiger, tells Texas Lawyer’s Tex Parte Blog that she hurt her wrist in the incident, but otherwise she is fine. “I got lucky,” she said. WFAA.com and the Dallas Morning News Crime Blog also have coverage.
A police report outlines the alleged events. Kingston was waiting at a stoplight in her convertible Tuesday evening when a man approached her, pointed a gun at her head and said, “Sarah, you’re coming with me, move over.” Kingston took off her seat belt, pretending that she was going to move over. When the man lowered his gun, Kingston opened her passenger door, knocking the man to the ground. Kingston then kicked the man several times. As he crawled away, she returned to her car and drove home, where she talked to investigators.
Kingston was reluctant to talk about details of the attempted carjacking. But she did tell Tex Parte that she has taken a self-defense course and recommends it for others.
Kingston’s husband is also in the news; he is running for the Dallas City Council.
