Yale Law School is the nation’s No. 1 law school in more ways than one.

Yale topped the law school rankings released earlier this month by U.S. News & World Report. Now U.S. News reports that Yale is also the nation’s most popular law school, based on the percentage of accepted students who go on to enroll.

In 2010, Yale Law School accepted 255 students and 205 chose to attend, making its “yield” 80.4 percent. The average yield at all 190 law schools in the U.S. News survey was much lower, at about 30 percent.

A top spot in the overall rankings doesn’t ensure popularity. Four of the 10 most popular law schools are unranked, “second tier” schools in the bottom quarter of the U.S. News rankings. They are the Southern University Law Center, Liberty University School of Law, Regent University School of Law, and North Carolina Central University School of Law.

North Carolina Central topped a different list, however, of the nation’s “best value” law schools in 2009. Brigham Young made the best value list in 2009 and 2010.

The five most popular law schools are:

1) Yale Law School, ranked first in the overall rankings, with a yield of 80.4 percent.

2) Brigham Young University’s Clark Law School, ranked 42nd in the overall rankings, with a yield of 68.5 percent.

3) Harvard Law School, ranked second in the overall rankings, with a yield of 67.3 percent.

4) Southern University Law Center, an unranked second-tier school, with a yield of 61.5 percent.

5) Liberty University School of Law, an unranked second-tier school, with a yield of 56.3 percent.
