Three youths accused of pummeling a mailman with icy-hard snowballs have been charged with criminal possession of a weapon and assault.

Walter Ward, 16, is accused of pelting the mailman with snowballs—the weapons—and then hitting him with his fists, the New York Daily News reports. Two juveniles were also charged, according to the New York Post.

Ward’s lawyer, Jacob Lipsky, claims his client was actually trying to prevent an attack on the postal carrier carried out by the two juveniles.

The New York Post includes this quote from an unidentified law enforcement source: “Maybe these punks will be getting their mail in jail,” he said.
