Atty Gen’l Admits Error, But Defends Firings

Attorney General Alberto Gonzales conceded in written testimony to Congress released by the Justice Department on Sunday that the controversial firing of eight U.S. attorneys could have been better handled, in a "more dignified" manner, Reuters reports.

"But Gonzales dismissed the notion that he would ever ask for a resignation for partisan reasons or to interfere with a case being prosecuted," the Reuters report continues. "He said key decisions were made by his aide, Kyle Sampson."

Sampson resigned under fire in mid-March, and has since been replaced -- twice.
