Baker & McKenzie Axes 6 in NY; Is Kirkland Laying Off Income Partners?

In another sign of the turbulent economic times, megafirm Baker & McKenzie, which historically has had its biggest roots in Chicago, is tightening its belt.
Although in "strong financial health," the firm says in a written statement reported by Above the Law, it is proactively taking measures to ensure that it remains on solid financial footing. Among them: Baker & McKenzie laid off six associates in its New York office this week, and some "travel and hiring restrictions" are being imposed.
Meanwhile, according to an earlier post on Above the Law based on information from unnamed "multiple sources," another major Chicago-based international law firm may have asked some non-equity partners in its headquarters office to find work elsewhere.
A Kirkland & Ellis spokesperson did not respond to multiple ABAJournal.com requests for comment on the layoffs that Above the Law says took place.
