Bill to Override Pay Bias Ruling

The House of Representatives will consider a bill that would override a U.S. Supreme Court decision limiting pay discrimination lawsuits.
The Committee on Education and Labor approved the legislation at the end of June and expects to send it to the full House soon, the New York Times reports.
The Supreme Court ruled May 29 that Title VII pay disparity complaints must be filed with the EEOC within 180 days of the original pay discrimination. There is not a new violation with each new paycheck. Ledbetter v. Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., No. 05-1074.
The House bill would provide that each discriminatory paycheck is a new violation of the law, at which time the limitations period begins to run.
Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., says he will introduce a similar bill.
