Bonds May Be Beefing Up ‘Legal Dream Team’

All-star slugger Barry Bonds is said to be assembling his own star-studded team, this one to defend him against perjury and obstruction of justice charges starting with a court appearance next week.

On the possible short list is John Keker, a well-known San Francisco criminal defense attorney, according to the New York Daily News.

And while the Daily News couldn't confirm whether Keker was hired, the paper painted a flattering portrait of the veteran attorney and former Marine.

But Keker, the paper reports, would come at a price: his retainer is believed to be at least $1 million.

Kevin Ryan, the former San Francisco U.S. Attorney who oversaw much of the BALCO investigation that ensnared Bond, told the paper it would be money well-spent.

"John Keker is an outstanding lawyer, and if Mr. Bonds got Keker to represent him, that would be a smart thing to do," Ryan said. "If I was in trouble, John Keker is the guy I would hire."

If he could afford him.
