A 200-attorney Boston law firm has laid off 8 percent of its workforce, due to the difficult economy.

The management of Choate Hall & Stewart sent an internal memo today explaining that, despite a strong 2008, it is laying off 15 attorneys and 23 staff members, reports the Boston Business Journal.

"General economic conditions ... have affected our clients and we anticipate that they may affect our work levels this year," the memo reads, in part. "We currently have too many lawyers and staff in certain areas."

Boston's Foley Hoag announced a total of 32 attorney and staff layoffs last week.
