Birmingham, Ala.-based Burr & Forman, identified as a key player in economic development projects in the South, has absorbed a Mobile, Ala., maritime practice, firmly establishing its presence in the Gulf Coast region.

The merger adds 18 lawyers from Bowron Latta & Wasden to the 200-attorney firm, the Press-Register reports.

Burr & Forman managing partner Lee Thuston told the Birmingham Business Journal that the firm was attracted to Bowron Latta's strong admiralty and maritime practice.

"We have a very large transportation practice, but it seemed like a three-legged stool—trains and trucks—but we didn't have shipping," Thuston is quoted saying. "Bowron Latta has probably the finest admiralty and maritime practice down there."

Thuston told the Press-Register that Burr & Forman intends to grow the Mobile office at "a fairly steady pace."
