Missing rent money has prompted an embezzlement investigation into a former employee of the California State Bar Association.

Robert Hawley, the bar’s deputy executive director, told the Daily Journal (sub. req.) that the amount of stolen money is believed to be “into six figures.” The person under investigation was fired in September, he said.

The stolen funds were rent payments by a couple tenants at the bar’s San Francisco headquarters, Hawley told the publication. Some tenants had been receiving a break on rent due to construction at the building, making it difficult at first to confirm the missing money, Hawley said.
