One of basketball's best-known badly behaved professional players has been charged in a California domestic violence case.

Former NBA star Dennis Rodman was arrested at a Century City hotel last night and booked today for allegedly hitting an unidentified woman. He was released on $50,000 bail, reports the Los Angeles Times.

One of Rodman's managers, Steve Simon, "said that alcohol was involved in the altercation, which left the woman with a bruise," and said that Rodman has had a tough time coping with a recent divorce, the newspaper recounts. Rodman, the Times notes, has in the past sought help for substance abuse problems.

The San Francisco Chronicle, in a gossip column that apparently relies on information from the TMZ.com celebrity website, also does not name the alleged victim, but says she is Rodman's girlfriend.

Rodman, 46, is scheduled to be arraigned on May 22, reports the Associated Press. It appears, from news reports, that the domestic violence charge against Rodman may be a felony.
