Claimed China Hack Attack Targets: US Gov’t, Business and Utilities

After news that China may have secretly copied information in the U.S. commerce secretary's laptop last year, a Congressman says that's far from the only intrusion for which computer hackers there may be responsible.

China also seems to have been hacking into computers in Congressional offices, Rep. Frank Wolf (R-Va.) tells the Los Angeles Times. He says the FBI found four computers in his own office were "compromised" by hackers working from China, and believes similar attacks may have occurred on computers in other offices at the House of Representatives.

And Chinese hackers might even be responsible for some U.S. power outages, in addition to "penetrat[ing] deeply into the information systems of U.S. companies and government agencies," the National Journal says in a cover story on "China’s Cyber-Militia."

"Federal authorities have been increasingly concerned about the Chinese government deploying a diverse network of spies and scientists and others to sweep up U.S. technology in recent years," the Times writes.

And Chinese hackers may have been responsible for the collapse of the New York Mets at the end of last season, ....

This story reminds me of the fellow recently on trial for child porn whose defense was that a hacker had hacked into his computer and left over 1300 pictures there as well as chatroom records.

It seems that almost every act of ineptitude or result of poor software design is now being blamed on hackers.
