Clients Fear Pay Hikes Mean Bigger Bills

Some corporate counsel fear hikes in associate pay could also raise their legal bills.

Three more law firms announced yesterday that they will pay new California associates $160,000 a year, matching New York levels, according to the Recorder. Some observers said the increase isn’t justified and wondered if it would prompt New York firms to boost pay even more.

James Hall, director of intellectual property at Silicon Valley's Quantum Corp., told the Recorder there seems to be no end in sight. "At some point I think it has to impact how much I'll pay in legal services,” he said.
