In an unprecedented effort to enforce their copyrights, five top computer game-makers are reportedly about to threaten 25,000 residents of the United Kingdom with lawsuits unless they ante up about $560 each.

The 25,000 residents are believed to have illegally downloaded computer games without paying for them, reports the London Times.

"The companies involved–Atari, Topware Interactive, Reality Pump, Techland and Codemasters–make some of the popular games, including The Lord of the Rings, the Colin McRae Rally series and Operation Flashpoint. It is estimated that as many as six million people in Britain share games illegally over the Internet," the newspaper writes.

The Times says the game-makers are seeking a High Court order to require Internet service providers to turn over the names of those responsible for illegal downloads. They are represented by the Davenport Lyons law firm.
