Controversial Vegas Judge Halverson Called for Jury Duty

A Las Vegas judge who faces a hearing next month on charges of improper judicial conduct turned heads late last week when she motored her way through her local courthouse.
Suspended District Judge Elizabeth Halverson made the courthouse appearance for jury duty, the Las Vegas Sun reports.
Halverson, who gets around via motorized scooter and breathes with help from an oxygen tank, is accused by state disciplinary authorities of mistreating staff and sleeping during trials. The Sun reports that the controversial judge had been assigned to a civil trial that was ultimately postponed.
In tightening rules for jury service to cut down on excuses, the Nevada legislature in 2005 began requiring judges and other public officials to comply with jury summonses.
Halverson's hearing before the Nevada Judicial Discipline Commission is set to begin June 9.
Halverson, meanwhile, is running for re-election.
