Securities class-action powerhouse Coughlin Stoia Geller Rudman & Robbins has announced formation of a practice group in Atlanta to pursue patent litigation.

The group will represent inventors and universities in suits against corporations, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Darren Robbins, a founding partner of the San Diego firm, said the focus on suits against companies is “actually quite consistent with our traditional practice.”

The newspaper concludes the move is a sign that the boom in intellectual property litigation is expected to continue. Heading the new group will be John Herman and Ryan Walsh, who both worked in the Atlanta office of Duane Morris.

Former Milberg Weiss lawyer William Lerach helped form Coughlin Stoia in 2004. He has since resigned and pleaded guilty to paying kickbacks to lead plaintiffs in connection with a federal probe of Milberg Weiss.
