The legal publisher Reed-Elsevier Properties Inc. has lost in its effort to trademark “lawyers.com.”

In a ruling (PDF) issued today, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit said the mark is generic and cannot be trademarked.

The lawyers.com Web site offers legal news and information.

A hat tip to Howard Bashman of How Appealing, who posted the ruling.
