Covington & Burling opened its first Asian office today, in Beijing. It is headed by Stuart Stock, a former chair of the firm's management committee, who will also continue to maintain a presence in Washington, D.C.

Senior counsel Ellen Eliasoph, a former Warner Bros. executive, and counsel Cao Yu, from the local Beijing law firm of Haiwen & Partners, will also be mainstays in the new Beijing office, reports Legal Week.

"Covington has been advising its international clients on legal and business matters in Asia for decades; but we concluded that opening an office in China was the logical next step to serve our clients," Timothy Hester, who chairs the firm's management committee, tells the British legal publication. The new office is expected to focus on the firm's strong regulatory and policy practice, advising on antitrust, corporate and environmental matters.

The new Beijing office is Covington's third internationally; the 650-lawyer Washington, D.C.-based law firm also has a presence in London and Brussels, as well as offices in New York and San Francisco.

"Hester said media law will also be a focus of the group drawing on both Eliasoph and Cao’s experience in the area," notes the Lawyer."
