Critic Says Denver Law Firm’s Ads Feature Lawyer Stereotypes

A Denver law firm’s new ad campaign featuring fictional obstructionist lawyers is raising some eyebrows.

The business-suited characters in the ads, running in the Denver Business Journal, block people trying to access an ATM, putt a golf ball and grab a towel after a shower, the Denver Post reports. "If your law firm spends time creating problems, instead of solving them, call us," read the ads for law firm Isaacson Rosenbaum.

John Sadwith, executive director of the Colorado Trial Lawyers Association, told the Post the ads hurt lawyers’ image. "These are terrible, capitalizing on stereotypes," he said. "Self-serving, alarmist advertising serves no purpose other than name recognition and a grab for market share."

Isaacson Rosenbaum partner Mark Grueskin said the ads, which will run in specialty trade and business publications, weren’t intended to make everyone happy. “They were designed to make a point about our law firm and the way we practice law," he told the newspaper.

A sad but too often true and accurate stereotype, often rewarded by the courts.  And good lawyers on dicipline committies who fail to admonish the offenders - well they are to blame.  It’s one of the dirty little secrets responsible for the current negative perception of the practice of law.
