Updated: A founder and name partner of the law firm Crowell & Moring has died.

John Frederick Moring died earlier this week from pneumonia, reports The BLT: The Blog of Legal Times. Moring, who was known as Fred, was 73.

Moring helped found Crowell & Moring in 1979 with 52 other lawyers from the firm then known as Jones, Day, Reavis & Pogue. Moring’s practice dealt with regulation of natural gas utilities.

He launched Crowell & Moring’s energy group and retired in 2000, according to a notice on the firm’s website.

Updated on May 15 to note that Moring was known by his middle name.
