Deal Improves Immigrant Center

The federal government has agreed to improve conditions at a Texas center for immigrant families awaiting deportation.
Children at the T. Don Hutto Residential Center in Taylor, Texas, will get improved education, nutrition, recreation and medical care under the agreement, the New York Times reports. A federal magistrate will inspect the facilities for compliance.
Other settlement provisions require curtains to be hung to shield toilets from view, allow children to bring pencils and paper to their cells, and permit children to go on field trips with their parents’ permission, the Houston Chronicle reports.
The deal settles lawsuits filed by the American Civil Liberties Union and the immigration clinic at the University of Texas Law School.
The Texas center, a former prison run by Corrections Corporation of America, is one of two facilities in the nation that house immigrant families facing deportation.
