Lawyers at Miller, Canfield, Paddock and Stone know what people want: free fuel.

The Detroit law firm, which is hosting a labor and employment law seminar Oct. 23, is giving away $10 gas cards to prepaid registrants, the National Law Journal (sub. req.) reports.

More than 200 people have signed up for the event, although a final count of participants receiving gas cards was not available, the NLJ reported. With the average price of gas at $2.75 a gallon in Detroit, gas cards are an innovative way to lure employers, their lawyers and human resource personnel to the seminar to learn how to better navigate the financial crisis.

“It’s a tough economy, which means that most employers are facing a lot of tough employment issues at this point in their economic lives,” chief executive officer Michael Hartmann told the NLJ. “Given the tough times with the Michigan economy, this is the perfect opportunity for people to know what their rights and responsibilities are.”

The Michigan unemployment rate was 8.7 percent in September.
