Did Edwards’ Friends Pay for $50K Trip Hunter Took With Baby?

Widely criticized for failing to follow up aggressively on a supermarket tabloid's reports last year of an affair between former presidential candidate John Edwards and Rielle Hunter, a filmmaker who was paid to make videos for his campaign, at least some of the mainstream media isn't taking the same approach now.

In its latest issue, the National Enquirer reports that Hunter and her six-month-old baby, whom Edwards denies fathering, took a $50,000 trip to the Virgin Islands by chartered jet earlier this month, paid for by friends of Edwards, the N.Y. Daily News recounts.

"The newspaper also said she stayed at the oceanfront home of another Edwards' pal, lawyer Lee Rohn," the Daily News account notes.

While scandalous details of a candidate's personal life arguably aren't legitimate news, they also may reflect other problems or issues that impact the individual's ability to do his job, Gail Collins wrote in a Campaign Stops blog conversation with fellow New York Times columnist David Brooks.
