Despite this country's reputation for short-lived marriages, the nation's per capita divorce rate has actually gone down significantly from its 1981 high and is now the lowest it has been since 1970.

The rate has dropped by one-third from its 1981 high of 5.3 divorces per 1,000 people, and is now 3.6 per 1,000, reports AP. Experts theorize that the lower rate may result from fewer couples getting married, or married couples trying harder to make their marriages work.
