The U.S. Justice Department has sued the Colorado Springs police department for refusing to promote an officer who helped his wife in a successful disabilities suit against the police.

The suit alleges the department did not promote Lance Lazoff in retaliation for helping his wife challenge its policy requiring the involuntary retirement of officers with disabilities, according to a press release.

The city issued a statement denying the claim of retaliation, the Denver Post reports.

Lazoff is a member of the department’s SWAT team who teaches at national and state academies.
