The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission contends in a lawsuit that Merrill Lynch & Co. discriminated against an employee because he is Muslim and Iranian.

The suit filed in Manhattan federal court says Majid Borumand lost a promotion and finally his job, the Wall Street Journal (sub. req.) reports. He was once told he was not permitted on the trading floor because he is from a high-risk country, the suit (PDF posted by the Journal) says.

Borumand, identified as a senior programmer, has a Ph.D. in theoretical physics and a master’s in mathematical finance.

Merrill Lynch denies the accusations.
