The former mayor of Newark, N.J., has been indicted on charges he used city credit cards to pay for more than $58,000 in personal expenses and sold city land to a friend for less than its value.

Prosecutors claim Sharpe James used the cards for liquor, movies, meals and travel, the New York Times reports. He is also accused of selling city land to a friend for $46,000 shortly before she resold it for $665,000.

James told reporters he is innocent. "I look forward to my day in court when the truth will come out,” he said.
