FAMU Law School Finds No Evidence Fen-Phen Lawyer’s Gift Was Tainted

The law school at Florida A&M University says there is “no objective evidence” that a fen-phen lawyer’s $1 million gift to the school in 2002 came from tainted money.

The statement by FAMU officials said they are still deciding how to use the money donated by lawyer Shirley Cunningham, reports the Orlando Sentinel’s blog, Sentinel School Zone.

Cunningham is on trial in Kentucky along with two other lawyers. They are accused of defrauding their fen-phen clients of $65 million in settlement proceeds. The jury began deliberations today, the Louisville Courier-Journal reports.

Cunningham donated the money to the law school on the condition that it be used to create an endowed chair that he would occupy at a salary of $100,000 a year. He was fired in 2005 after the school said it found no evidence Cunningham was doing any work.
